The Lend-A-Hand Center is a 501c3 nonprofit run by an all volunteer Board of Directors. Charles and Diann Carnes serve as Co-Executive Directors.
Charles Carnes
Co-Executive Director
Charles and his wife Diann took over leadership of the Lend-A-Hand Center in 2019. Charles is a pastor that has decades of experience working in the timber industry and operating heavy machinery. Charles loves to build and use his sawmill and is ready to lend a hand whenever the need arises.

Diann Carnes
Co-Executive Director
Diann and her husband took over leadership of the Lend-A-Hand Center in 2019. Diann has worked previously as a clerk at the post office. Diann is very family oriented and enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Stanley Mills
Board Treasurer
Stan Mills is a CPA who spent many years growing up at Lend-A-Hand. He is also a skilled piano player.
Steve Baltic
Board Secretary
Steve has served as Board Secretary for over 10 years. Steve first came to serve as a volunteer at Lend-A-Hand in 1996. Steve has a background in social work and also worked with Appalachia Service Project in the community.
Kathryn Engle
Board Chairperson
Kathryn first became involved with Lend-A-Hand in 2011. She wrote her master’s thesis on the history of the Center and for 3 years ran the Lend-A-Hand Center Grow Appalachia Gardening Program and helped found the Knox County Farmers’ Market. Kathryn is the Director of the University of Kentucky Appalachian Center.
Janet (Berk) Berkenbosch
Board Vice Chairperson
“Berk” is a retired schoolteacher who has been volunteering at Lend-A-Hand since 1987. She is a great help around the Center in the summer and brings lots of experience to the board.
Becky Mills
Board Member
Becky has extensive experience as an insurance agent. She joined the board in 2021 and brings lots of connections in the community as someone who grew up on the Creek.
Andrea Myers
Board Member
Andrea is a mixture of all the best things from the North and the South. Born & raised a Buckeye, she spent her summers in Eastern Tennessee with her mother’s family. A graduate of Union College, Andrea is a long time Air Force Research Laboratory contractor that has managed multiple Air Force research programs and is now a technical proposal writer. Andrea is the mother of eight and volunteers with marching band and cheerleading. Andrea also leads a small group at her church, The Valley in Piqua, OH and became acquainted with Lend-a-Hand in June 2021 on a mission trip with her church.
Dr. William Ashburn
Ex Officio Board Member
Dr. Ashburn has been providing medical services in Barbourville, Kentucky and our area since 1988. During that time, he conducted a medical clinic here at Lend-A-Hand Center for 25 years. He is a Family Practice physician at Access Family Health Center in Barbourville, Kentucky.
Paul Calhoun
Former Board Member
Paul served on the board 2019-March 2022. He is very active in his church and has many contacts throughout the community. Paul has a background in truck repair and wood processing.
